The cloud vision of Cloud.com

This is THE topic of the last year, a word that every IT person says and sometimes without a clear idea of what it represents.

Someone says it is similar to IAAS (Infrastructure as a Service) and other says it is a Virtualization Layer, in my opinion it is a new way to deliver every component of a service, from infrastructure to application, with rules that defines SLA, security etc.

After I read the news about the CloudStack development by Cloud.com, I prepared the lab to try it and the rest of the article describes this test.

There are 3 version of the software Community, Enterprise and Service Provider, if you register on Cloud.com you can free download the documentation to install and configure the Community Edition that is free.

The installation guide say that you need two server, one for management and one for computing, the second require to support hardware virtualization (like Intel VT), the operating system needed is Fedora or Ubuntu 64 bit version, but you can choose to install both service in a single installation.

The test system:

Server IBM x3950 4 x Dual Core Xeon 3GHz with HT 24GB Ram 4 x GBit Ethernet and 2 x HBA 2 Gbit

DS4300 Dual Controller with 2 x 681GB LUN

Brocade 8 port SAN Switch

3Com 24 port Gigabit Ethernet switch

I installed the Ubuntu 64 Bit version and was simple to install all the necessary packages as described in the guide but you need to remember two things, first you need to control server over console (restart network services are needed to complete the configuration) and second you need to disable ipv6!
